The Matildas’ success gripped the nation and highlighted how far women’s sport has come in recent years. There was so much to celebrate. But the toxic trolling of Ellie Carpenter over the past few days highlights the ugly underbelly of misogyny in our country and the abuse female sports persons face on a regular basis.

It’s estimated female athletes cop trolling ten times more than male counterparts and it takes a huge emotional toll.

Carpenter was shattered by her mistake and owned it immediately after the game, showing her amazing courage, totally lacking in her online abusers. And it was one mistake in a fine World Cup campaign. The young Matilda played a key role in getting her team to the World Cup semi final. I trust she will have strong supports around her in this stretching time.

And shame on those who hide behind online names and offer up vile and vitriol to female athletes. In contrast to Ellie Carpenter they are cowards and if you know them, call them out!

Thanks Ellie Carpenter for all the joy you and your team have given our nation! Go well! You’re a champion.
